Installing a theme on my new WordPress program April 17, 2010 at 3:34 am

Having uploaded WordPress on to my website, I now need to think about finding the right theme and making my own statement. When you are considering you should keep in mind what your blog is going to be about and try to locate a theme that blends in with those ideals. There are several different places you can find and download free WordPress themes of various kinds. If you just post WordPress theme free in a search engine it will come up with many sites for you to go and look at. The reason why they are called themes is because they indicate what kind of web site it’s meant to go on. You wouldn’t want a golfing scene on a web site about tennis. It’s a good idea to browse through them until you find the theme you like. Alternatively, you can purchase a premium theme. These are obviously paid for services but there are many choices among them and some are a lot more advanced than the free ones. Remember if you are purchasing a theme it is possible that these will need additional plug ins. Check before you purchase and find out about any extra plug ins. that might be needed as this page doesn’t include them.

Step 1
Download the Theme you want and save the file in the zip format on your hard drive. Make a note of where it was saved. Once you have down loaded the file, you will need to unzip the portion you are going to be using. For this you can use something like WinZip or The Extractor. The “read me” file is only there to give you information.

Step 2
With the file extracted, you are going to navigate to your web site to upload it. Once there, you are now going to upload the file to your WordPress section on your web page. You will be using a FTP program like FileZilla. This is a free open source program, but you will need to connect to your web host. Using your log in name and pass word for your account with your web host connect to log onto the backend portion of your webpage open it up and view your files. You will need to find out where you installed your WordPress program. Once you have found it look for the directory called WP-content/themes. Now upload the directory section of the theme you have chosen. You should be able to see something like this.

Step 3
Move on over into your WordPress section and log in, in the admin panel. Scroll through and find the section that says Presentation Tab. Your main page should be visible. Click on it and it should activate the theme.

It is fairly simple to do, and if you have any problems at all you can always ask in the general support forum. There are plenty of folks out there that are only too willing to give you a hand.
