You have been dragged kicking and screaming into the digital age by the children. Gone are the days where you can get away with doing an occasion email. You need a blog. WordPress to the fore with help at hand. They give you the tools. They give you the themes. And they even tell you how to do it. There are many free themes you can choose from and alter them to suit your personal need. It sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. There’s a whole industry of people out there only too willing to help you. The sceptic in me has looked for the catch in all of this, but so far I haven’t found one. There are so many people having fun with this, and they are all too willing to share. Right now we are going to give you a brief rundown on how to install WordPress.

What you will need is a web hosting site with your URL where you intend to host the WordPress theme of your choice.

Step 1: Download of WordPress

You need to go to the WordPress site to download the latest version. It’s important that you go to the actual site and not anywhere else to make sure you get the right version. The website is over here to download. Ensure it says WordPress download in the URL bar. Download it either for windows if that is what you are using. That file will end in .zip. If you want the open source version, that will end. tar.gz.

Step 2: Open the files (Extract the files)

Once you have extracted them, they will be available on your machine in a file ready for you to use.

Step 3: Place the files on your host website (Upload the files to your host)

Use a file transfer program to upload on to the website. This you do by loading them into the public html folder. Upload the entire unzipped file.

Step 4: Log into your C Panel (Set up the database)

You need to be in the C Panel of your website where you will go to MySQL ® Databases section. Here you need to create your database. Create a name and a password. (Note down the password) When on the next step you will give yourself all the privileges. Make a note of the full username it shows here as you will need both, it and the password.

Step 5 Install. (Install WordPress)

Check on your web browser. Don’t worry if you see an error. You shouldn’t.

Create a wp-config.php using the interface page and enter your database details. You should now be on the WordPress where you can type in the names and details of your email as well as your blog. You can now log in.

If you have any problems WordPress has a general forum where you can post questions and get help from many wordpress enthusiasts. You are on the path of creating your own personal blog where you can share your thoughts photographs, etc. with the world.
